The galaxy is in flames. The old regime has fallen, and now the pieces of a fractured dynasty are on the brink of war, all vying for the ultimate goal of reforming the Empire under their control. Welcome to the universe of Twilight Imperium.
Twilight Imperium, or TI to aficionados, was the flagship universe of Fantasy Flight Games (FFG), and one of the first games they ever released. Now, for the 20th Anniversary of TI, FFG announced the fourth edition.
This is the same game as the third edition with the units and rules from the two subsequent expansions all rolled into one box. Also, some of the rules are streamlined to keep players more active and ease play.
The game is 150 dollars at retail and FFG is offering some neat pre-order bonuses in the form of two art prints and a hardback rulebook.
The particulars of this release out of the way, let me tell you, TI is an experience more so than a game. Yes after you play, there will be one, clear, definitive winner. They will walk away with all the honors the game has to offer, but in my experience that is not what I remember.
I remember the twists and turns, the way I played the cards, and the secret agendas. How my plans came crashing down after a terrible combat role. How the person who strikes first is almost always the loser. This is a game that has a destination, but that’s not why I love it. I love it because of the journey. This is how you play again about politics, and war and claiming results. The interactions...the way you plan and find out who your friends are. I love it so much, and love it more with friends.
This game allows you to be Paul Atreides, or Chrisjen Avasarala, or Ceirci Lannister...it is a game of cosmic thrones, and I love every second of it even when I lose.
In my opinion, this is a game everyone should try once. Love it or not, my opinion is that you always come away with stories worth sharing about the experience.
